Harry Burr Ferris was born on May 21, 1865, in Greenwich, Connecticut. He graduated from Yale College in 1887. Upon graduating, Ferris entered the Yale School of Medicine, from which he graduated, cum laude, in 1890. The following year, he began teaching at Yale School of Medicine as a professor of anatomy and later, he acted as chairman of the department. He stayed there until his retirement in 1933.
